Review of the movie "Golem" (2016)

The film adaptation of Peter Ackroyd's novel "Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem"&It tells the story of John Kildare (Bill Nighy), a disgraced detective who follows in the footsteps of a brutal murderer in the poor London neighborhood of Limehouse at the end of the 19th century. Among the candidates for the role of the murderer is variety show actor Dan Leno (Douglas Booth), author of Capital&Karl Marx in his own bearded persona (Henry Goodman), novelist George Gissing (Morgan Watkins) and unsuccessful writer John Kree (Sam Reed), on whom the main suspicion falls.

This film provides a rare opportunity to watch Karl Marx, with blood on his beard and a ridiculous Jewish accent, cut off a prostitute's head.

A few days ago, a graphomaniac was found dead in his own bed. His wife Lizzie (the brilliant Olivia Cooke) is accused of murdering the writer, and now Kildare needs to solve the case before an innocent woman is sent to the scaffold.

This is director Juan Carlos Medina's second feature film and his first English-language project. Externally, "Golem" is an ordinary tabloid detective in a Gothic setting, where Jack the Ripper's top hat peeks out from behind the corner of the screen. But dig deeper and you'll find a feminist film about men's savior complex. Unfortunately, any attempts to analyze the main idea lie in the plane of spoilers, so we will have to talk about other aspects of the tape.

Nighy was not the first candidate to play Kildare. At first, the main role was supposed to go to Alan Rickman, who was extremely interested in the project a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, due to illness, he refused. He failed to return to the screens. Rickman left us last year, and the film was released with a dedication to the late actor. The actor, who has been shining mainly in comedic roles lately, gives a wonderful performance as Detective John Kildare. However, throughout the two hours, the thought still persists that Rickman would have been forced to play villains throughout his career in this rather atypical role for an actor.

However, the main star here is Olivia Cooke as Elizabeth Cree, a strong, so-called self-maid woman married to a neglectful loser. She and Detective Kildare, two seemingly completely different people, share a special bond. They are outcasts in society for various reasons, and therefore create a very balanced composition on the screen.

"Golem" is a very atmospheric painting. Cinematographer Simon Dennis transports the viewer into the soot of gray night slums, which is changed by the warm, soft interiors of the variety theater, reproducing Victorian London with mud on the streets, drunken sailors, fog over the Thames and figures in dark raincoats under kerosene lanterns. Plus, there are very naturalistic murder scenes, for which artificial blood was not spared.

In this story, fiction is intertwined with real historical facts, and the setting needed to be as authentic as possible. The main suspects in the case, except John Kree, are also real characters. The famous British comedian of the 19th century Dan Leno (George Wilde Gelvin), the German philosopher Karl Marx, who wrote his first essays in London, the naturalist writer George Robert Gissing, a proponent of the idea of female emancipation, who for some reason was made even more sexist in the film. They all walked the gloomy streets of Victorian London, at a time when Jack the Ripper was operating in nearby Whitechapel, which is undoubtedly the main source of inspiration for the mysterious figure of the Golem himself.

The main twist is not such a twist. An attentive viewer will understand what's what even before the second act begins, but that's not the point. This is not so much a detective story as something called "character study".

The golem itself in the film is a purely symbolic figure. This is not a monster from the "Outpost&"and not a clay avenger from Jewish mythology. It is only at the end of the tape, when the identity of the killer is revealed, that the irony and true meaning of the name becomes apparent. A golem is a creature created to protect those who are unable to protect themselves.

"Golem" is a strong niche film. It won't collect much at the box office, but maybe in a few years it will get something like a cult status.
